Why the Probox sells in Tanzania
A Tanzanian dealer calls the Probox one of the most popular commercial vehicles in Tanzania. Carbarn Tanzania gives it full marks for resale value, parts and service, and road suitability, and lists fuel use of about 3.6 β 6.3 L per 100 km across its model codes (Carbarn calls its scores a guide, not a guarantee).
Tanzanian buyers search for it by name, in English and Swahili. Google suggests phrases such as "probox price in tanzania", "probox succeed price in tanzania" and "bei ya probox tanzania".

What exporters in Japan ask for a Probox or Succeed
USD 2,700 β 10,300 FOB
Dealer asking prices in Japan, checked 7 November 2026
Nine listings from three exporters (SBI Motor, carused.jp and TokyoCarZ): a 2013 1.3L at the low end, a 2020 1.3L with 28,000 km at the top. Most 2015 β 2019 units were USD 3,400 β 5,400.
These are asking prices for vans in Japan before freight, inspection and Tanzanian tax. The cheapest units often have high mileage.
Indicative only. This is not a price offer from us. The real price depends on the exact car, its grade, mileage and condition, and on the day it is bought.
How the landed cost is worked out
This is how the cost of a Probox landed in Dar es Salaam is built. We do not show a total: we have no TRA calculator result for a van, and it is not clear which excise rules apply to vans after July 2026.
| Van price (FOB) | Our price for the van in Japan in your quote, including the auction purchase and transport to the port. |
|---|---|
| Freight to Dar es Salaam (RoRo) | We quote the current rate for your van. |
| TBS inspection in Japan | Required before the van is loaded. We arrange it and it is in your quote. |
| Import duty | 25% of the customs value. Exporter guides work it out on the CIF value: price plus freight and insurance. |
| Excise by age | Depends on how TRA classes the Probox. As a car, the July 2026 bands apply: 18% at more than 8 and up to 10 years, 35% at more than 10 and up to 20, 40% over 20. Before July 2026, utility vehicles (HS 87.02 and 87.04) paid 5%. Whether that still holds is not clear. Confirm with your clearing agent. |
| Excise by engine size | For cars, guides disagree on the 1.3L and 1.5L (0% or 5%). Whether vans pay engine excise at all is not clear. Confirm with your clearing agent. |
| VAT | 18%, paid to TRA at clearing (exporter guides). |
| Railway Development Levy | 1.5% of the customs value. |
| Port and clearing charges | One exporter guide gives about TZS 1.5 β 3 million for port charges, depending on vehicle size (single source). Ask your clearing agent. |
Rates come from news reports, a law-firm summary, the EAC tariff page and exporter guides read on 7 November 2026, not from TRA. Confirm the total with your clearing agent or the TRA calculator before you pay a deposit.
Tanzania rules that matter for the Probox
Van or car: ask your clearing agent first
In Japan the Probox is registered as a commercial van. We found nothing saying whether TRA treats it as a goods vehicle (HS 87.04, which paid 5% age excise before July 2026) or as a car (HS 87.03, 25% before July 2026 for cars over 10 years). This decides a large part of the tax, so settle it with your clearing agent before you choose a van.
Age excise from July 2026
The Finance Act 2026 bands are 18% for vehicles more than 8 and up to 10 years old, 35% for more than 10 and up to 20, and 40% for over 20. If they apply to the Probox, a 2017 β 2018 van falls in the 18% band and a 2016 or older van in the 35% band (our rough reading: TRA counts age from the manufacture date). We found no rate for vans under 8 years (2019 and newer).
Inspection
Every van needs a TBS inspection and roadworthiness certificate in Japan before it ships. We arrange it.

Paying safely and avoiding scams
Pay a company account, never a personal one
Buyers in Tanzania and Kenya have lost money to fake Japanese exporters. Pay only into the exporter's company bank account, in the company's name. If anyone asks you to pay a personal account or a different name, stop and ask us on WhatsApp.
Approve the car before you pay
We send you the auction sheet and photos before we bid. You approve the car and the price before any deposit.
Check the inspection certificate
Your car needs a TBS roadworthiness inspection in Japan, and TBS names EAA Company Ltd as the agent for Japan. Ask for the certificate and check it before the car sails.
Watch for copied websites
Some scammers copy a real exporter's website or listings and give their own bank details. Check the web address carefully, and talk to the exporter on a number you already know before you send money.
Toyota Probox to Tanzania: questions buyers ask
What is the Probox price in Tanzania?
We cannot give one price, because it depends on the van's year, engine and condition and on Tanzanian tax. In Japan, exporters were asking USD 2,700 β 10,300 FOB for the Probox and Succeed vans we checked on 7 November 2026, most 2015 β 2019 units USD 3,400 β 5,400. Freight, inspection, duty, excise, VAT and clearing come on top.
Is the Probox Succeed price in Tanzania different from the Probox?
Exporters list the Succeed under its own name, with the same NCP160V and NHP160V codes as the Probox van, and the asking prices we saw were in the same range. Tell us which one you want, or both, and we search for each.
Is a Probox taxed as a car or as a commercial van in Tanzania?
We do not know yet, and it matters. Before July 2026, utility vehicles paid 5% age excise and cars over 10 years paid 25%. We found nothing on how TRA classes the Probox now. Ask your clearing agent before you pay a deposit.
What is the Probox fuel consumption per km?
Carbarn Tanzania lists about 3.6 β 6.3 L per 100 km across Probox model codes, the hybrid being the lowest. Real use depends on load and roads.
What should I tell you about the job the van must do?
Send us the job: what you carry, how much, on which roads and how many km a day. Put it in the "Anything else" box at the end of the form. It tells us whether a 1.3L, a 1.5L, the hybrid or the 4WD fits, and we search for that.
